Friday 5th July – Church

Musician, pianist, accompanist, speaker

Following studies at Liverpool and Birmingham Universities Andrew taught for five years as Director of Music at Saltley Grammar School in Birmingham. Then for over thirty years, as an accomplished cellist, he was Head of String Teaching and a Senior Manager with the Sandwell Music Service.

Andrew retired from his career in music education in 2007 and has since been busy not only as an accompanist and chamber musician, but also as a soloist on piano, harpsichord and organ. He has a full schedule of engagements as a public speaker/performer on a variety of musical topics including “The Story of the Piano”. Andrew also runs a Music Club, and organises the “Music in Saint Mary’s” concert series in Alveley (near Bridgnorth) where he lives.

In his spare time he likes walking, particularly long distance footpaths.

“The Story of the Piano” tells us how the piano came to replace the harpsichord as the main keyboard instrument, why it was invented, and why it was called the piano. We then follow its development through music which has been written for it, and meet an interesting array of pianist/composers along the way.
